Simple Question: Is Wind Useful? On August 12, 2009, the press reported that the Pacific Northwest windfarms produced a record 2000MW of energy output for an hour on Aug 6, just shy of 100% of capacity. This was quite a remarkable event, a first in the many years of operations. But not reported and falling rapidly on the heals of the brief event is the performance of the week of 8/17/2009 shown in the chart. Note that as the peak demand load went up through a weather high pressure hot spell, the windmills had difficulty running a lightbulb in any city. Let’s begin calling this energy as it truly is: supplemental. It is certainly not a useful alternative in the successful criteria regime previously noted. 2 comments to Simple Question: Is Wind Useful? |

Delvin touts nuclear power, By M.Dupler, Aug. 25, 2009

Bravo Senator Delvin.
It is well past time to fully engage the debate on clean, sustainable nuclear power. Or we become doomed to the death spiral of less and less energy per capita.
Is Wind Useful? The blog: http://kandg.org/WPBlogger/ shows the graph: demand for electricity and recent supply of wind power in the NW. Everyone should draw their own conclusion: Is Wind Useful?
On the other hand, the Columbia Generating Station pumps out 1300 nonstop megawatts of electricity 24/7 at greater than 90% efficiency. Wind power efficiency ranges from zero to 30%.
China and Korea are building the advanced Westinghouse reactors, AP1000, with construction time in 36 months, efficiency of 97%, with a design life of 60 years.
Economically it appears that we’ll just be flapping in the breeze, or not flapping at all.
Thanks Sen. Delvin for standing up to the debate, and no thanks to Rep Chopp for flopping.
Jairam Ramesh, url below, a no nonsense environmental minister from India, says that the Western obsession with carbon emissions is wicked and economically foolish. Deepak Lal is the author & economist.
Many have been saying the same thing for a number of years.
What does it take for the Washington State government, governor, Dept.of Ecology, CAT team, etc., to stop their obsessions and stop menacing the future of the state residents. It is past the time when governments, state and federal, cease trying to pick winners and losers. They have been unsuccessful at this.
